INTERVIEWING FROM HOME (IFH)

The “Cliff Notes” Version – Tips for Interviewing Right Now

By Emily Nahem & Neepa Parikh | Office of Career & Life Design

We came across a great article on LinkedIn about Job Interviews During the Pandemic. Here are some key takeaways from the article, sprinkled with some advice of our own:

What to expect:

  • Candidates should expect the hiring process to move a bit slower than usual since key stakeholders may take a while to get on the same page about a candidate.

Do your research:

  • Continue to do research on the company and interviewer(s). It can be more difficult to form a connection over video so make an effort to mention something about the company or the interviewer’s LinkedIn profile.

Prepare your space and practice:

  • Opt for a neutral background with good lighting and make sure your camera is at eye level.
  • Make sure to practice speaking in front of the camera.
  • A benefit is that you can have notes in front of your workspace to refer to during the interview.
  • Using a Zoom virtual background? Keep it professional!

During the interview:

  • Ask specific information about the company’s hiring timeline and if the position will/can be remote until the pandemic is over.
  • It’s important to tell the recruiter how interested you are in the opportunity. Thank the person for their time, tell them how impressed you are with the team, and say how honored you are to be considered for the position.

GGU Resources:

  • Practice video interviews by using the StandOut platform. Send an email to your GGU Career Consultant or to careers@ggu.edu to get access.
  • GGU students have access to Vault through the library, which will give you inside information about numerous companies.

Want to chat with someone about an upcoming interview or maintaining your job search? Make an appointment with a career consultant on GGU Careers. We are still providing appointments via Zoom or phone.
