Self-Improvement? There’s a Podcast for That!
By Kandis Rodgers | Assistant Director | Golden Gate University
It can be a struggle to incorporate self-improvement into our schedules. Ten minutes of yoga before work or five minutes of meditation doesn’t seem like much until you actually try to do it on the daily.
Enter podcasts. Podcasts have become the latest craze and listening to podcasts on 1.5x the speed so that you get all the juicy content in half the time is now a thing. Side note – I tried this and it is surprisingly effective. I found myself pushing the limit of how fast I can speed it up before the words were incoherent. I maxed at 1.5x.
So of course, my awesome colleagues and I in GGU’s Office of Career Planning want to ensure you have your fair share of podcasts – but with a focus on topics ranging from navigating the love/hate relationship you have with your job or living your best career life. The list of podcasts is endless.
Here are a few that stood out:
Being Boss is a podcast for creative entrepreneurs, freelancers, and side-hustlers. Join Emily Thompson and Kathleen Shannon as they dig into the mindset, habits, routines, and boundaries that help you make money doing what you love.
Safe For Work is an advice show that reminds you that while your office may be crazy, you don’t have to be. Hosts Liz Dolan and Rico Gagliano give advice on everything from how to avoid burnout on the job to how to fake an illness when you’re calling in sick. They also talk to experts about those moments at the office that can challenge the best of us: negotiating raises, knowing when it’s time to move on…or dealing with that annoying office mate with no boundaries.
On James’ website he writes, “On my podcast, I get to talk to some of the greatest Choose Yourselfers, innovators, and peak performers in the world, including Mark Cuban, Sir Richard Branson, William Shatner, Coolio, Arianna Huffington, Ray Dalio, Tony Hawk, Tyra Banks, Peter Theil and 500+ more of today’s leading peak performers. I’ve talked to authors, artists, rappers, billionaires, drug dealers, astronauts—all who forged their own paths, found financial freedom, and harnessed the power to create meaningful and fulfilling lives.”
Squiggly Careers is a weekly podcast that will help you take control of your career development. Hosted by the founders of Amazing If, Sarah Ellis and Helen Tupper, together they cover all things work: from how to manage stress and overcome your confidence gremlins to micro-aggressions and discovering your strengths.
The 7 Minute Job Interview is where we provide job interview tips, resume tips, career advice, and LinkedIn training to college students, recent graduates and young professionals.
Whether you have 10 minutes or a whole hour, take some time to improve yourself and your career! Tired of listening to podcasts and want to have a two-way conversation with someone about your job, that annoying co-worker, or how to be happy in your career? Make an appointment with a career counselor.
